Positive Reinforcement Training
Positive Reinforcement Training How positive reinforcement ONLY training is failing the people and dogs who need help the most. What
Getting a new puppy? This is extremely exciting, but can also be very overwhelming. Below is my complete list of everything you will need before you bring your new puppy home.
I can also help you by doing the initial consultation before your puppy arrives online, so I can help you prep your house to make sure that your house is ready for your new puppy. For more information on my services, click here.
Crates are a key component to your puppies training success. In order for the crate training to help you with potty training, it’s important that your crate be no larger than your puppy. This means your puppy should be able to standup, turn around and stretch out comfortably on their side. Crates with dividers such as the ones below are the best options when first crate training your puppy.
If your dog does not display self harm behvaiours such as digging or biting at the bars, this crate is great for you!
For dogs that tend to self harm (dig or bite bars) in metal crates. This crate is the best choice for you.
Perfect for the modern home, and for those who really care about their interior decoration.
Perfect for escape artists or dogs that self harm through digging or chewing on bars.
Typically I try to stay away from expensive dog beds in the beginning as most puppies will destroy them. I will stick to very cheap and cheerful beds at first until I know the puppy won’t chew it. For destructive chewers, as long as they don’t consume the bedding, old towels or blankets are what I use for bedding.
A fairly cheap and cheerful option. Two sides (soft plush and plain), available in grey and blue and multiple sizes.
A cheap and cheerful foam option. Two sides (warm and cooling), available in multiple sizes.
A more padded option for dogs who get cold more easily. Available in multiple sizes.
One of the MOST helpful tools for crate training and helping your puppy sleep easy. These toys have an internal warmer and heartbeat, mimicking sleeping with their siblings or mother. This helps the sleeping transition at your house so you don’t put your puppy in the bed with you (don’t do it!).
Having a leash to start walking training and indoor house training is a must. Typically puppies can chew leashes so choose something cheap and cheerful to start. Once they are fully grown, you can get all the fancy expensive leashes and collars you want!
House leashes are also very important to leave on your puppy while they are out of the crate and 100% supervised by you. Typically I recommend Dollarstore leashes in the case that they end up getting chewed.
This leash is great for a house leash if you don’t want to make your way to the dollarstore to get one.
Easy on the hands, these leashes come in fun patterns and different widths and lengths. For small puppies under 20lbs, I recommend the 1/4″ x 6ft size.
Hands free leashes are handy for if you want more security or perhaps an extra hand when walking your puppy.
Even if you will not be walking your new puppy in a collar, regular collars are crucial for ID tags to be attached in the case that they escape and get loose. house leashes are also usually recommended on the collar, as harnesses are often chewed when left on a puppy all day long. Remember that puppies grow quickly, so at first, keep it cheap and cheerful so yo won’t be spending so much money on replacing it every few months as they grow.
Martingale collars are only meant for walking (not for wearing in the house especially when unsupervised). This is a great collar to assure that your puppy doesn’t slip out of their collar.
Harnesses certainly help with walking and training young pups as they give you a little more control without being concerned about pulling on their delicate necks. Please be aware that there is NO such thing as an INESCAPABLE harness. The following harnesses are some of the more comfortable, inexpensive and less escapable options if they are fitting correctly.
The “H” style harness is one of the best designs to avoid putting pressure on your dogs neck and less likely for them to be able to skip out of.
NOT escape proof like they claim (none of them are) BUT it is definitely less likely for it to happen with a harness like this.
This type of harness helps a lot with puppies that like to put on the breaks a lot while walking.
There are SO many options for dog bowls. The very most important thing is to make sure the material it’s made of is food grade and BPA free. After that, dishwasher safe and appearance and definite bonuses.
Durable and safe, these bowls are typically indestructible and will last your pups lifetime.
A slow feeder helps with puppies that eat too fast. If you have done your research on your puppies breed characteristics, you might already know that this bowl could be very helpful in slowing your new pup down while eating.
High value treats make training much easier. Typically one ingredient freeze dried treats are the most yummy option for your puppy. Freeze dried treats are also easy to break into small pieces making sure you aren’t giving too many in one training session.
Freeze dried beef liver is one of the highest value treats on the market. These ones comes especially small to avoid giving too much.
It’s always a risk that your new puppy might have an upset tummy due to stress or typical parasites. Loose stool or diarrhea can really mess up potty training. Below are some helpful options to have on hand that can help clear up upset tummies quickly.
Vet recommended (and tested by Hairy Tales) this pro biotic is excellent in helping puppies with loose stools or diarhea.
Pureed canned pumpkin has a tendency to solidify loose stools. Most puppies also really like it. Mix a spoonful into your pups meal for a few days to help when changing foods, or with loose stools.
Oftentimes, when dogs have really upset tummies, vets will recommend chicken and rice as a replacement meal as its easier on the tummy. Have this on hand in case on a weekend or holiday your pup gets the runs and you can’t go to the store to buy chicken.
As long as your dog is not a very aggressive chewer, the following chew bones should be safe to leave with your dog while they are unsupervised.
A safe way to allow your dog to chew on a stick. This chew is made of powdered wood that is made with a substance to safely keep it together. It doesn’t splinter and the pieces are safe to swallow.
The same as the plain Dogwood Stick, but get 2 different wood stick chews in this pack. One of them is BBQ flavoured for those pups that are into meat off the grill!
The longest lasting chew you will ever buy! This all natural antler chew is great for dogs of all ages. Be sure to only get the split antler chew as whole antlers have been known to cause cracked teeth.
An all natural wood chew made of sustainably harvested mangrove root. Because its made of root, this chew does not splinter and the pieces are safe for consumption.
Use any of the toys below to stuff your dogs food or favourite treats inside to keep them busy and their minds active. Making your dog work for their food creates a better food drive, and keeps your dog busy for more time during the day. The more your dog is busy, the less trouble they can get into. For instructions on how to stuff your dogs kibble in a stuffable food toy watch the video below.
Stuff this toy with your dogs food or favourite treat and freeze it to keep them busy.
The same toy as the Kong Classic, the Extreme is a more durable version for the more hard core chewers out there.
This Kong is formulated with a softer rubber, which is more satisfying for teething puppies.
Similar in shape to the Kong, this stuffable chew toy is made of natural non-toxic rubber, infused with mint for fresh breath. This toy has a replacement guarantee with Planet Dog.
This toy has plenty of room for lots of different sized treats or food.
This stuffable chew toy can also be used as a great toy for fetch as its shape causes it to bounce erratically so your dog can’t predict where it will land. West Paw also guarantees all of their zogoflex toys with a replacement plan.
The qwizl is an all-time favorite, as you can put chew sticks inside, making for a more challenging chew. Bully sticks fit inside like a charm. This toy can also be stuffed with other treats and food.
This toy has two difficulty levels. Used by itself, it’s a level one for easy. When combined with another Toppl (larger or smaller in size) they can be screwed together to create a more challenging game.
The Tizzi’s legs can be twisted together to hide the treats in the hole.
Rope toys are a great toy to have around as they have many uses. One really great hack for teething puppies is to soak the rope toy in broth and freeze it. This helps soothe teething puppies gums and makes for an occupying activity.
For those of you who prefer to go the all natural route, this one is a good option.
Puppies can go through these, so sometimes buying a pack is helpful so you always have some on hand when needed.
One of the keys to potty training is proper cleanup. If you do not use a dog urine specific cleaner, the enzyme’s the dogs smell in urine will stay on the floor making them want to pee on the same spot again. Below are some examples of urine offs that will actually work.
A long time favourite, this urine off works well on any type of pet stains (vomit, urine or feces).
A well known household brand that is one of the cheapest options, and works well.
If you life in a condo or apartment building and have a balcony, or you get your puppy in the dead of winter, these are a few options that can be very helpful temporary options for potty training.
Pee pads should NEVER be used without a potty box or grass potty patch to avoid confusion and prolonged potty training issues. They can however be extremely helpful for transportation in the beginning before you know your puppy can travel well without accidents.
If you live in a high rise and don’t have access to the outside immediately outside your door, grass potty patches can be extremely helpful during the potty training process.
For those that get puppies in the dead of winder (especially toy and pocket breed dogs), having a potty box can help eliminate the confusion on using pee pads as they are a distinct place a puppy can go too to pee.
