Positive Reinforcement Training
Positive Reinforcement Training How positive reinforcement ONLY training is failing the people and dogs who need help the most. What
Puppy training should begin the FIRST DAY you bring your puppy home with you. I often notice that in the typical “puppy classes” you’ll find in your neighborhood do not focus on what I believe are the most crucial lessons and aspects of puppy training. They often like to focus on obedience training such as “sit”, “come” and “down” for example. Unfortunately obedience training is not the most important aspect of early puppy training.
Proper socialization to as many people, places, objects and environments.
Learning how to be polite when interacting with people, and what they are allowed and not allowed to do in your home.
Teaching your dog to eliminate outside or on a particular spot you’ve designated.
Proper socialization is the most important aspect of a puppies foundational training. The word “proper” being the key word. It is especially important to get this work done before the “puppy socialization window” closes at the age of 4 months. This is because before the age of 4 months, puppies are incredibly resilient to fear, and it takes very little time and effort to get them used to something that they might have initially been terrified of.
Nipping, biting, jumping, and barking are all typical behaviours a puppy will exhibit to try to play and communicate with you. While this might be how they communicate with their siblings, this is not an appropriate way of communicating with you. Its important to teach them right away that these are unwanted behaviours, and your puppy needs to learn to communicate with you differently.
Jumping up is one of the best examples of something a puppy will do when they are little to get attention. While its cute when they are small, this will quickly become a problematic behaviour when they get bigger and could knock someone over or scratch their legs.
Whenever your puppy is doing a behaviour, you should always ask yourself if this is something that could become a problem when they are older. If the answer is “yes”, discouraging the behaviour right away is important.
It’s important to allow your puppy to explore and have access to your house and meet people under supervision so that you can start to teach them what they are allowed (and not allowed) to do.
To avoid the house from getting destroyed, many people try to set their puppies up for success by “puppy proofing” their house before the puppy comes home, and allowing the puppy to have access to entire rooms or floors of the house unsupervised. Unfortunately, the lack of supervision creates opportunity for potty accidents and destructive behaviour. Not matter how well you “puppy proofed” the house, the uncluttered floors and hidden cables won’t last forever, and eventually, your puppy has to learn that these things are not theirs to chew.
This is why crate training when you can’t be watching them, and 100% supervised house exploration sessions are the key to teaching your puppy that they can’t just chew on and pee on whatever they want.
Of course, crate training for many new puppy parents can be incredibly challenging. If you are struggling, DO NOT GIVE UP! It’s important to contact a trainer as there are many techniques to help you though your crate training woes. Without crate training, your house manners and potty training will be a real challenge. Rather than completing the training in weeks, you’ll be struggling for months.
This is where I come in, to help teach you how to communicate with your puppy about what they should and shouldn't do. It's important to understand how to communicate with your puppy clearly and effectively to help them learn the new rules of their home. Without this clarity, we are often left with frustrated pet parents and confused and out of control puppies that do not understand what to do.

Hyperactivity and over-excitability is a state of mind that is often created by the humans in a dogs world. The good news is that because it is often created, it can also be reversed.

While many trainers claim they can get rid of behavioural issues, only very few are successful at it.

Kristina is like a medium for dogs. As a first time dog owner, I've spent hours reading, scouring the internet, and working with other trainers to try to teach my lil dude, Schnitzel. Alas, his guarding, reactivity, barking, and at times — aggression, has persisted, causing major stress and concerns for his happiness and safety. Cue Kristina — my goodness! Kristina has given me so much insight into lil guy's psyche, and the tools I need to communicate with him. Even after our first session I saw progress. A lot of trainers will apply one philosophy to all dogs — whereas Kristina takes everything you've told her about your dog, and combines it with her extensive knowledge of different breed's psyches/needs to come up with a plan that will work for them — lemme tell ya, it HAS! She just gets them, and makes the training process so much more comprehensive for owners. Thank you so much Kristina!
My 1 year old Chihuahua has been working with Kristina at Hairy Tales Training for just over a month now. It's incredible to see the progress he is making though practicing his clearly listed homework duties that Kristina provides for us. She is quick to respond to any questions I have had throughout my dogs training and is true pleasure to work with.
We've been working with Kristina for about one month now and completed two sessions. After our first session, we've seen so much improvement in our little rescue's confidence and obedience. Dobby is really reactive to other dogs and people outside, it was becoming increasingly difficult to manage him when we had to take him out for walks because he would bark or try to lunge at dogs or people even if they were across the street. He was also barking and protective of the home. Kristina has been really helpful with providing us with the tools to help us succeed and build a stronger relationship with our dog. She is really knowledgeable in dog behaviour and not only provides you with the training tools, she explains why the dog is behaving or reacting a particular way. Our relationship with our dog has become so much stronger since we've started, he really is much happier and less anxious. Kristina also provides detailed homework that you can refer back because there are so many things you need to remember. I highly recommend her! She is our second trainer we've worked with and we probably learned more in one session than we did in our previous 3 sessions with our last trainer. We plan to work with Kristina for as long as we can. Thank you!
There's a good reason Kristina has 82-now 83- five star reviews here. My partner and I have been with her for just one session with our two rescue doggos and already she has helped us more than all the googling and unsolicited advice possibly could. She offers clear, concise instructions without shaming you for not knowing this as some trainers can. She is always paying close attention to the pups without making you feel ignored and uses those small moments that occur in sessions as only a professional like her could pinpoint as a learning experience for us, and teachable moments for the furry ones. We are absolutely thrilled and are looking forward to continuing this with her!
Kristina is knowledgable and a hands-on trainer. She was attuned with my dog and created a very safe and supportive environment that promotes learning. I highly recommend her.
We rescued an anxious possessive hound mix. We knew we were out of our depths and needed help. We turned to Kristina and have not regreted. Kristina is very knowledgeable and pragmatic in her advice. She listens well and tailors solutions. She is available to us between sessions. I have hope that we can train our dog to be a great dog
Kristina is a very experienced trainer who also provides thorough notes after each session, which is one reason I find her fee very good value. After just one session, I was able to make substantial progress with my two-year-old rescued terrier. She also checks in between sessions, which I appreciate. Overall, she obviously has a deep love of dogs and is very conscientious about helping their humans understand their pets’ behaviour and how best to change it where necessary. Call me and my dog very satisfied customers!
Before we consulted Kristina about our rescue dog Stella’s leash reactivity, we couldn’t take her for a walk without her barking/lunging/snarling at LITERALLY EVERYTHING. We’re talking — we leave the door of the condo building and it was non-stop snarling at everything she could see. People, cars, bikes, dogs. If you could name it, Stella was trying to bite it. After just the initial consultation session with Kristina and being given homework on relationship building/the correct tools (and being taught how to use said tools), we saw a considerable improvement in Stella’s leash reactivity and her leash walking manners. It’s been 3 weeks since our first session, and today Stella walked so casually in a loose leash position, I thought I must’ve brought the wrong dog home from the groomer. She does not bark at people and cars anymore (sometimes she’ll tense up at cars, but we can redirect her now). Her threshold for seeing dogs without reacting has considerably improved and we can even walk by many of them on the sidewalk without issue — a massive improvement from seeing them even across the street and reacting. I don’t feel scared to take her on walks anymore and my confidence as a handler has also greatly improved. AFTER ONE SESSION!!! Aside from Kristina’s expertise in training, my partner and I are extremely grateful for how gracefully Kristina communicates with us. Kristina never shamed us for not knowing better or not already seeing Stella’s signs of guarding (which is related to the reactivity issue). She never made us feel badly about Stella’s behaviour issues. She teaches in such an easily understandable way. We have another session with Kristina booked soon, and I imagine we’ll sign up for more in the coming weeks/months to continue to help Stella live the best life she can. I can honestly say that it’s probably the best money we’ve ever spent. Highly recommend!!!
I’ve been to many trainers in the city and saw little to no progress with my dog. I finally found Kristina and saw immediate results! She was able to assess what my expectations were, what my dog needed, and set me up with the right tools and techniques for my dog to succeed. Previously I had seen “positive only” trainers and I can attest that with a balanced approach both me AND my dog are 1000X happier. My dog now has the structure he was craving and is so much more content with his life. And I’m not getting dragged down the street. With Kristina’s help, I can also now trust my dog off-leash pretty much anywhere which has been a game changer and increased the quality of both our lives. Don’t throw your money away like I did, just see Kristina first!
I have been working with Kristina 5 sessions so far, and I have nothing bad to say about her. I can say that Kristina is a friendly, caring person not only towards her clients but also to their animals. She is an active listener, and she assesses your problem and your dogs behavior/demener to come up with the best and ultimate plan that works for your dog. I highly recommend her and have recommended other clients to her.
